Carpet Cleaning Do’s and Don’ts

Getting your carpet clean and stain-free can be a challenging task– which is why removing stains and spots from time to time is important. Since we’re a carpet cleaning service in Newcastle, here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get: how to remove pesky stains from the carpet without ruining or changing the fiber or color, what DIY methods work and which ones should be avoided, and for common stains like blood, soda fountains, etc.

After spending hours every day answering questions from customers, we figured the best way to address these common inquiries was a list. When it comes to treating stains on your carpet, there are a few common mistakes people make.

Learn what those mistakes are now and avoid them for good.

Common Do’s and Don’ts of Removing Stains in Carpet

1. Blood.

The first sign of bloodstains requires swift action. Immediately rinse as much off with cold water as you can. Prepare a solution of 2 tablespoons dishwashing liquid in cold water. Solutions such as Oxyclean also work well for tough bloodstains.

2. Ink.

To remove stubborn stains from clothes, first, dip a clean cloth in isopropyl alcohol and gently dab the stain. If you’re struggling to remove the old nail polish try not to rub too hard, or using nail polish remover may help. Keep in mind that it takes time to see the full extent of a solution’s strength, so be sure to do some testing before treating the whole area.

3. Pet Stains and Odors.

If you spill a pet stain on the carpet, blot it away first and then treat it with a specialty solution marked safe for pets. If the stain remains, try a water and vinegar solution followed by baking soda. If at all possible, avoid scrubbing the stain or treating it with a hot steam cleaner (this can set the stain and make it much more difficult to remove later). Professional pet urine odor treatment is necessary every year to remove pet urine, stains, and bacteria from your home.

4. Water Soluble Stains.

Use a solution of 1 cup water and 1 tablespoon ammonia or 5 parts water with 1 part chlorine bleach if cleaning up vomit, wine, or chocolate spills. Removing stains on wool-blend carpets can be difficult, so use gentle soap and water only.

5. Wax, Oil, Fat, and Gum.

Place the gum in a freezer-safe dish. Cover it with ice and let it freeze for several hours, then chip away at it using a knife. As a first step, place a paper towel on top of the stain and iron it lightly to transfer the stain to the paper towel.

6. Glue.

Dip a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and gently apply to the stain. When the glue is still wet, use a soft cloth to remove it.

Use a solution made up of 1 ¼ cup water and ¼ cup bleach to remove the stains. After you have rinsed the area thoroughly and removed excess water, use towels to blot it dry. To remove a bleach stain from the carpet, hire only professional cleaning companies.

8. Food, Cola, Dyes, and Alcoholic Beverages.

Make your own cleaning solution using white vinegar or try a store-bought product like Oxi Clean or Resolve.

9. Latex Paint Or Washable Ink.

To remove this stain, soak the area with a ratio of ¼ teaspoon white vinegar mixed in 32 ounces of water. If it is not completely removed after an hour of soaking, reapply the solution and wait.
